Jesus is _______________.
Author, Judah Smith, has produced a text that tries to explain Jesus in a refreshing way. The author’s implications are…
- Jesus is your Friend.
- Jesus is Grace.
- Jesus is the Point.
- Jesus is Happy.
- Jesus is Here.
- Jesus is Alive.
Within these explanatory chapters are attempts to bridge the truth of Christ to relevancy. These attempts are very clear and somewhat potent at times, but at other times, a bit of a stretch. Are there things to glean from Smith’s explanations? Of course.
There are portions of the text that address the pharisee in all of us, & the doubting in all of us.
It is quite true that Jesus is a friend of sinners & that He calls us friends, once we confess our need of Him. (John 15) However, there is a greater need to see Christ as Lord of Lords, and King of Kings, & that EVERY knee will bow before Him before it’s all said & done. Smith did a good job of portraying Jesus as someone worth coming to & surrendering to. But what needs to follow-up is the Lordship aspect of salvation & that we were bought at a price. This is not a burden to place on a believer, but a healthy dose of truth, so that the “friendship” one shares with Jesus is not treated like a simple, come & go friendship.
This is a book for a certain context & time.
