Father Hunger

Douglas Wilson has provided a strong biblical text that exhorts fathers to live out their God-given role & duty to their children. This text is NOT a “how-to” on parenting. It is a strong exhortation to follow through with what God has commanded, called & gifted us to do & be.

The reader will not have to wait until the 4th or 5th chapter to be challenged & confronted. Douglas Wilson gets right to it in the beginning & does not hold back the rest of the way. Some of the strong matters of application in the text are…

  • Identify with your child(ren). Always verbally introduce them as “this is MY son/daughter”. Let them know they BELONG to you in the Lord.
  • Be physically present with your child as much as possible. This is where the walk has to match the talk. Your child should rarely have to ask, “Where is Daddy?” If you are not there, then they ought to at least know where you are & what you are doing.

Wilson walks through some of the Proverbs on fatherhood & sonship using biblical truth as a mandate for the charge of Fatherhood. After all, Fatherhood is the core of all things, because this world in it’s entirety is still held in the hands of a loving, gracious, holy, Father God.

This text helps answer the question: “Why God calls men to love & lead their families?”
